1. Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn là gì?
Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn (Past Continuous tense) là thì được sử dụng khi muốn nhấn mạnh diễn biến hay quá trình của sự vật hay sự việc hoăc thời gian sự vật hay sự việc đó diễn ra và đây là thì tiếng Anh mà nhiều bạn nhầm lẫn nhất.
2. Dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn
Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn sẽ rất dễ nhầm lẫn cũng như khó để sử dụng sao cho chính xác, Tự học IELTS sẽ đưa ra một số dấu hiệu để nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn như sau:
2.1. Trong câu có bỏ những trạng từ chỉ thời gian cùng thời điểm xác định dưới quá khứ
- At + giờ chính xác + thời gian dưới quá khứ
- I was studying English at 10 pm last night (Tôi đang học tiếng Anh lúc 10h tối hôm qua).
- In + năm xác định
- In 2015, he was living in England (Vào năm 2015, anh ấy đang sống ở Anh).
2.2. Thì Quá khứ tiếp diễn có sở hữu câu có “when” khi diễn tả 1 hành động đang xảy ra thì hành động khác xen vào
- When she was doing homework in her room, her phone rang (Cô ta đang làm bài tập dưới phòng thì điện thoại của cô ấy đổ chuông).
2.3. Câu có sự hiện diện của 1 số từ/cụm từ đặc biệt: while, at that time
- She was drawing while he was playing games. (Cô ấy đang thiết kế khi mà anh ấy chơi điện tử).
- My brother was watching TV at that time. (Lúc đó em trai tôi đang xem TV).
Trên thực tế, các dấu hiệu nhận biết thì quá khứ tiếp diễn chỉ mang tính tương đối. Trong 1 vài trường hợp, 1 số dấu hiệu dù có xuất hiện nhưng không sử dụng với quá khứ tiếp diễn là điều bằng lòng được.
3. Công thức của thì quá khứ tiếp diễn
3.1. Thể khẳng định
| Cấu trúc | S + was/were + V-ing. |

| Ví dụ | We were just talking about it before you arrived. (Chúng tớ đang nói về chuyện đó ngay trước khi cậu đến.) |
3.2. Thể phủ định

| Ví dụ | He wasn’t working when his boss came yesterday. (Hôm qua anh ta đang không làm việc khi sếp của anh ta đến) |
3.3. Thể nghi vấn
| Cấu trúc | Q: Was / Were + S + V-ing? A: Yes, S + was/were. No, S + wasn’t/weren’t. |
| Ví dụ | Q: Was your mother going to the market at 7 A.M yesterday? (Lúc 7 giờ sáng hôm qua mẹ em đang đi chợ có phải không?) A: Yes, she was/ No, she wasn’t |
4. Cách sử dụng thì quá khứ tiếp diễn
4.1. Sử dụng thông thường
4.1.1. Nhấn mạnh diễn biến, quá trình của sự vật, sự việc hay thời gian sự vật, sự việc đó diễn ra
- At 10 A.M yesterday, she was watching TV.
(Vào lúc 10h sáng, cô ấy đang xem TV) - When my sister got there, it was 8 p.m.
(Khi chị tôi tới, lúc đó mới 8 giờ tối.)
4.1.2. Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra tại 1 thời điểm trong quá khứ
- While he was taking a bath, she was using the computer
(Trong khi anh ấy đang tắm thì cô ấy dùng máy tính.) - While I was driving home, Peter was trying desperately to contact me.
(Peter đã cố gắng liên lạc với tôi trong lúc tôi đang lái xe về nhà.)
4.1.3. Diễn tả hành động đang xảy ra thì có hành động khác xen vào
- He was walking in the street when he suddenly fell over.
(Khi anh ấy đang đi trên đường thì bỗng nhiên anh ấy bị vấp ngã.) - They were still waiting for the plane when I spoke to them.
(Khi tôi nói chuyện với họ thì họ vẫn đang chờ máy bay.)
4.1.4. Hành động lặp đi lặp lại trong quá khứ đồng thời làm phiền đến người khác
- My dad was always complaining about my room when he got there.
(Bố tôi luôn than phiền về phòng tôi khi ông ấy ở đó) - She was always singing all day.
(Cô ta hát suốt ngày)

4.2. Sử dụng quá khứ tiếp diễn trong bài thi IELTS
Với những cách dùng thông thường trên của thì quá khứ tiếp diễn thì với bài thi IELTS chúng ta luôn phải kết hợp với thì Quá khứ đơn, trong đó thì Quá khứ tiếp diễn dùng cho hành động đang diễn ra thì bị chen ngang, còn thì Quá khứ đơn dùng cho hành động chen ngang.

5. Phân biệt while và when
Nhiều bạn khi học tiếng Anh thường đánh đồng 2 từ này do có cùng nghĩa là “khi”. Tuy nhiên, các bạn lưu ý while thường dùng cho những sự kiện, hành động xảy ra trong một khoảng thời gian kéo dài, còn when thường dùng cho những sự kiện, hành động xảy ra tại một mốc thời gian nào đó. Do vậy, when có thể dùng cho cả thì quá khứ đơn và Quá khứ tiếp diễn, nhưng while chỉ có thể dùng cho thì quá khứ tiếp diễn.
Bên cạnh đó trong thì quá khứ tiếp diễn, chúng ta thường sử dụng “while” hoặc “when” để nói về mối liên hệ giữa 2 hành động. Vị trí của những từ này trong câu phụ thuộc vào mục đích của người nói muốn nhấn mạnh hành động nào là ý chính (đang thực hiện) và hành động nào là ý phụ (xảy ra chen ngang).
VD:
While/when she was washing the dishes, his parents came back home.
His parents came back home while/when she was washing the dishes.
She was washing the dishes when her parents came back home.
